Custom Chain Maille Designs
While we offer many interesting pieces of chain maille jewelry in our catalog, we encourage you to exercise your creativity and envision a new piece of jewelry, custom designed and woven just for you. There are many reasons for why you might want a custom piece of jewelry, but chief among them is the flexibility to have a piece created your way.
Designing your Jewelry
When you custom design your jewelry, you have several choices to make. Some of those choices are easy, others more difficult. After all, if you're like us, you want it all! Here are some of the things you should think about when considering a custom design:
What kind of piece do you want? A necklace? A bracelet? Some earrings? Perhaps you are interested in a set of pieces that can complement one another.
What is the purpose of the piece? Do you intend to wear the piece everyday, or only for special occasions? Is the piece intended to be worn at work or in a more casual setting?
How durable does the piece need to be? While we strive to make all of our jewelry so that you can enjoy it for a long time, different weaves lend themselves to different activities. For example, a European 4-in-1 chain is typically not as sturdy as a Japanese 12-in-2 chain and thus might not stand up to the stress of being worn when you participate in your favorite sporting event.
How large does the piece need to be? Typical bracelet sizes are 7" for women and 8" for men. Perhaps you prefer the piece to fit more snugly, or perhaps you prefer additional slack. Keep in mind that too much slack in a piece can lead to it getting caught on things. If you're not sure how long the bracelet should be consult our page on Measuring for Bracelets.
What materials would you like to use? This is one of the more difficult decisions that you need to make. Silver and gold-filled rings can make for a breathtaking piece, but they can also lead to a breathtaking bill. On the other hand, you'll likely enjoy your piece throughout your life. In addition, such jewelry will likely retain its value because of the precious metals. Jewelry made from base metals, such as anodized aluminum or stainless steel, does not qualify as traditional "fine" jewelry, but it frequently weighs less than precious metals. Aluminum offers an added benefit of being available in a wide variety of colors, which can make it more visually interesting than its precious metal counterparts. Finally, the base metals cost less than precious metals, which means you can get a nice piece without breaking your budget.
It certainly isn't necessary for you to make these decisions on your own. Please feel free to contact us and we'll do our best to walk you through the different options so that you'll get the chain maille jewelry that you want.
Paying for your Jewelry
Once you finish working with us to design your custom designed jewelry, we'll request a 25% non-refundable deposit. Even though all of our work is done "on demand" so that we don't maintain large inventories, a custom design often requires special materials that we might not ordinarily keep in stock. Once the piece is completed and shipped, we'll bill you for the remaining 75% of the cost.
