Frequently Asked Questions

We want you to be completely comfortable doing business with us. To better serve you, we have provided this page of frequently asked questions about both our business and our services.

Jewelry

Why do you use the term "hand-woven" rather than "handmade"?

The term "handmade" is often overused. As a matter of fact it's so overused that there are actual Federal Trade Commission (FTC) rules about when something is and isn't "handmade." The basic gist of it is that unless you control the entire fabrication process (after the point where the wire is drawn), you aren't supposed to use the term "handmade." Since we don't usually fabricate our own rings we feel it's more accurate to say that we "hand-weave" our jewelry. Is the FTC likely to come after us? No, but we want you to know exactly what you're getting.

How do I measure for a bracelet?

Measuring for a bracelet is easy. We provide you with all of the instructions to ensure that you are pleased with the fit of your custom chain maille bracelet.

How long does it take to ship my order?

The short answer is, "it depends." We make each chain by hand. While we typically complete each chain within 2-3 business days, if you place a large order with many items, your order will likely take longer to complete. If we expect to exceed our normal 2-3 day turnaround, we will contact you.

Why does it take so long to get a bracelet or necklace? I can go to the store and purchase one immediately.

Please consider that you are getting a custom made chain in your choice of materials, colors, length and clasp. We encourage you to go into most jewelry stores and ask for a custom made chain in a Japanese weave. We're willing to bet that you'll get a blank look rather than a piece of jewelry. Many of these weaves don't lend themselves to automation and are thus not economical to be mass-produced. Since all we do is custom work, we don't need to be limited by mass-production methods.

I found a piece that's almost what I want, but not quite. Will you custom design a piece for me?

Absolutely. Our goal is to get you the exact piece that you want and we're more than happy to discuss a custom design with you. Please contact us and we'll be more than happy to discuss your ideas.

Why won't you accept the return of custom pieces?

By definition a custom piece has been designed just for you and according to your specifications. With such pieces it's much more difficult to find another buyer with your exact style and taste. We're simply not equipped to do that kind of matchmaking so, for now at least, we don't.

Materials

What's the difference between gold-filled rings and gold rings?

Gold rings are solid gold or gold alloy. They are also quite expensive. Gold-filled rings are made from a layer of solid gold alloy that wraps a cheaper material, such as brass. You can read more about the differences between gold and gold-filled rings on our gold page.

What's the difference between gold-filled rings and gold-plated rings?

Gold-plated rings have only a very thin layer of gold and this layer wears away quickly. Gold-filled rings contain as much as 5% gold by weight, which makes them much less likely to wear away with normal use. You can read more about the differences between gold-plated and gold-filled rings on our gold page.

Shipping

How long does it take for shipping?

The time needed for shipping depends on the shipping method that you choose. You can find more information on our shipping page.
